At the "Next@Acer" press conference held during IFA 2026 in Berlin, Germany, Acer revealed its first-ever Googlebook teaser image. During the announcement, John Solomon, VP of ChromeOS at Google, took the stage to outline the vision behind launching this brand-new platform.
From Cloud to AI: A Paradigm Shift 15 Years in the Making
When Google introduced the very first Chromebook back in 2011, personal computing was tied down by heavy desktop operating systems and local software management.
Google noticed that people were shifting towards web-based workflows and designed the Chromebook as a lightweight, "cloud-first" device. As a result, today, most office and educational tasks are completed entirely within web browsers.
Solomon stated that just as the debut of the Chromebook 15 years ago drove the transition from local storage to the cloud, the launch of Googlebook marks a major turning point toward AI-centric computing.
Moving From Web-First to AI-First OS Design
In his presentation, Solomon noted that modern computing is no longer just about loading web pages or running apps. Instead, it requires context-aware user assistance, seamless cross-device integration, and on-device AI model processing.
Just as ChromeOS was built from the ground up around the Chrome browser, Solomon explained that Googlebook is engineered on a foundation of native Android architecture and Gemini.
This represents an intentional redefinition of the platform—reimagining how we interact with our devices—rather than a mere bump in hardware specs.
Details to Be Unveiled at the September 15 Event
While Acer emphasized its long-term partnership with Google during the press conference, the company did not reveal specific hardware details such as processor configurations, display specs, or pricing.
Google is scheduled to host a Googlebook preview event in New York City on September 15, where partner devices and the actual performance of Aluminium OS will be showcased. However, the platform will not be officially launched for sale at this stage.
Additionally, previous investigations have confirmed that Acer's upcoming model will be the "Acer Googlebook 14 GP714-91N," and some of its specs have been revealed.
