Intel’s budget mobile processor, Wildcat Lake (Core Series 3), is forming the foundation for a new tier of Googlebooks built around the reference board codenamed "Ocelot."

While the higher-end Fatcat series powered by Panther Lake (Core Ultra Series 3) is slated to kick off the Googlebook release in autumn 2026 as an "ultra-premium" option, the Ocelot series uses Wildcat Lake—the lower-cost successor to Intel's N-series—and is expected to launch later.

This article summarizes the development progress so far for "Ocelot," the hardware base behind Wildcat Lake-powered Googlebooks.

Ocelot: The Development Base Powered by Wildcat Lake

Ocelot, serving as the reference board for Wildcat Lake (Core Series 3), had its development confirmed in May 2025. Initially believed to be a Chromebook, subsequent development details revealed it to be an entry-level Googlebook model.

Since then, multiple derivative models have entered development, with five models confirmed as of writing:

The first two boards derived from Ocelot were "Ojal" and "Matsu," with code traces highlighting the major distinction between them as clamshell versus convertible designs. "Kodkod" and "Ocicat" were added subsequently, and development on "Hekla" began recently.

Ojal

Ojal was identified alongside Matsu as one of the first reference boards, designed as a clamshell laptop without a numeric keypad.

Code commits indicate support for two USB-C ports, HDMI, a fingerprint sensor, a backlit keyboard, as well as Wi-Fi 7 and 5G (WWAN).

While single-battery compatibility has been confirmed, the manufacturer is currently unknown.

Matsu

Discovered alongside Ojal, Matsu is designed to offer a choice between clamshell and convertible form factors, with optional touch support.

The board features two USB-C ports, one USB-A port, a fingerprint sensor, a backlit keyboard, up to 65W charging, and Wi-Fi 7 support.

Code references note multi-vendor battery compatibility, including specs that match batteries used in Acer devices, indicating a high probability that Matsu will be an Acer product.

Kodkod

Kodkod, like Ojal, is engineered as a keypad-less clamshell laptop.

It offers broader connectivity options than Ojal, with code pointing to two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, HDMI, a microSD card reader, and a fingerprint sensor. The target manufacturer remains unknown.

Ocicat

Ocicat is a touch-enabled convertible model confirmed to include two USB-C ports, one USB-A port, HDMI, and a fingerprint sensor.

Battery configurations in the codebase suggest it could be manufactured by HP.

Hekla

Hekla, discovered as the fifth board in the Ocelot series, has only recently entered development, leaving details scarce. However, code snippets reveal a keypad-less clamshell design, a 14- to 16-inch display, up to 65W charging, two USB-C ports, one USB-A port, a Glow Bar (light bar), a fingerprint sensor, and a backlit keyboard.

While the manufacturer is unconfirmed, potential candidates include ASUS, Lenovo, or Dell.

Key Specifications of Intel Wildcat Lake / Core Series 3 Processors

Wildcat Lake, the chip driving the "Ocelot" series Googlebooks, is the codename for Core Series 3, officially announced by Intel in April 2026.

Memory support includes up to 48GB LPDDR5x-7467 or up to 64GB DDR5-6400, alongside Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and up to two Thunderbolt 4 ports.

Wildcat Lake serves as the successor to the Intel Core 3 / 5 (Alder Lake-N generation) chips used in Chromebook Plus models, positioning it as an entry-level alternative relative to Panther Lake (Core Ultra Series 3) in the Fatcat series.

Positioning of Wildcat Lake in the Googlebook Ecosystem

Googlebook’s Aluminium OS reportedly features three distinct tiers: "AL Premium," "AL Mass Premium," and "AL Entry."

The high-end "Fatcat" series equipped with Panther Lake is positioned in the top-tier AL Premium class, which means the initial autumn 2026 release of Googlebooks will start primarily at this "ultra-premium" tier.

While Wildcat Lake’s exact positioning has not been officially detailed, the presence of Panther Lake in the top slot points toward either "AL Entry" or "AL Mass Premium."

Given that Core-powered Chromebook Plus models were handled separately from baseline Chromebooks, Wildcat Lake is most likely targeted at the "AL Mass Premium" level.

Summary

Five board developments have been identified so far within the Wildcat Lake-powered Ocelot series: Ojal, Matsu, Kodkod, Ocicat, and Hekla.  

Since the first wave of Googlebooks in autumn 2026 will be restricted to ultra-premium AL Premium models, Ocelot series devices—expected to fit the AL Mass Premium tier—will be launched in subsequent rollouts.  

As of writing, Intel is the only chipmaker with active board developments in the AL Mass Premium segment; no Googlebook projects powered by MediaTek or Qualcomm silicon have been confirmed yet.
