Google has begun rolling out a system update for Googlebook (version 17.CL3B.260622.286.R2), optimizing NPU driver and on-device AI memory management to free up 3 to 6 GB of system RAM.
This optimization reduces background memory consumption, helping minimize tab reloads and crashes during heavy Chrome workloads, while improving overall multitasking performance on 16 GB RAM Googlebooks.
NPU Driver Optimization Frees 3 to 6 GB of System RAM
According to release notes posted on Reddit, the update refines NPU driver memory management, resulting in a 3 to 6 GB reduction in system RAM usage.
On Googlebook, background AI services (AICore) previously allocated a large amount of memory to run OS-integrated on-device AI features continuously. With this update, memory binding management has been optimized, releasing previously reserved RAM for general tasks.
Thanks to the optimized memory allocation in AICore, system memory is now reclaimed more efficiently even under heavy usage with numerous open tabs in Chrome, preventing unexpected automatic tab refreshes and browser crashes.
This change is initially rolling out to Intel-powered models among the first-generation release—including Acer Googlebook 14, ASUS Googlebook 14, and Lenovo Googlebook 15—while Snapdragon-powered devices (HP Googlebook 14 and Dell XPS Googlebook) are currently excluded.
How to Check for Updates
This system update (17.CL3B.260622.286.R2), which includes the memory optimization, is gradually rolling out across all five first-generation Googlebook models.
You can check for the latest system update by navigating to [Settings] > [System] > [Software update] > [System update].
