On September 23, 2026, Google updated its Chrome Enterprise and Education Help Center, providing schools and businesses operating existing Chromebooks with information on Googlebook OS migration, licensing, and management feature availability timelines.
According to the help center page, Google will assist with the migration to Googlebook OS for Chromebooks with support periods extending beyond 2034 at the time of purchase, preparing many models for direct migration. However, eligible models and migration methods will be "shared at a later date."
Support for Existing Chromebooks Continues; Migration Targets to Be Announced Later
As announced back in May, current Chromebooks will follow Auto Update policies, allowing ChromeOS devices to receive regular updates and security patches through up to mid-2034.
For school and enterprise deployments, Chromebooks remain available for purchase, and active Chrome Enterprise Upgrade and Chrome Education Upgrade licenses will maintain management capabilities for existing Chromebooks.
Regarding the transition to Googlebook OS, Google states that many new commercial Chromebooks will be eligible for upgrade. However, the list of eligible models, migration steps, and required conditions have not yet been disclosed.
Note that Chrome Enterprise Upgrade and Chrome Education Upgrade licenses are intended for managing ChromeOS devices. Purchasing new Googlebooks or migrating eligible Chromebooks to Googlebook OS will require management under new licenses.
Googlebook Management Capabilities
The Googlebooks launching in 2026 are intended for consumer use and do not support domain enrollment or centralized fleet management.
Google plans to expand commercial deployment over multiple years, with comprehensive management features scheduled to roll out progressively starting in the second half of 2027.
Currently, the following two management-related features are available:

Sign-in with Managed Google Workspace Accounts: Only if permitted by domain administrators via Google Endpoint Management

Chrome Browser Cloud Management: When enabled by users themselves, common enterprise and school browser policies can be applied
As future management capabilities, Google highlights device, user, and browser controls in the Google Admin console, reporting features, and Zero-touch enrollment. APIs will also be provided for organizations using third-party EMM (Enterprise Mobility Management) providers.
Security and Web App Handling
Google states that ChromeOS security features—such as verified boot, sandboxing, automatic updates, secure student testing capabilities, and multi-layered filtering—will also be provided in Googlebook OS.
Googlebook OS combines the foundation of ChromeOS with the Android tech stack, and the migration of security features to the new foundation will progress according to a multi-phase roadmap.
Regarding Web apps, Google explains that while optimizing Android app support, it will continue to provide IT management features and developer APIs for Web apps.
