The "Quick Insert" key featured on Googlebook keyboards currently does not support remapping to alternative functions.
According to comments on Reddit by Google’s Mishaal Rahman, Googlebook OS lacks native support for remapping the Quick Insert key itself.
The settings menu only allows users to adjust traditional Caps Lock behavior—assigning it to Ctrl, Alt, or the Google key—mirroring the behavior of Gboard on Android.
Caps Lock Placement and Alternative Shortcuts
On Googlebooks, similar to Chromebooks released in late 2024 and beyond, the Quick Insert key occupies the spot traditionally reserved for Caps Lock on standard PC keyboards. Pressing the key brings up a menu for clipboard history, emojis, GIF insertion, translation, and voice typing.
Since the Quick Insert key's function cannot be altered directly, users must press Fn alongside the Quick Insert key to enable Caps Lock. For temporary uppercase typing, holding the Shift key while entering letters remains the standard method.
Feature Gaps Compared to ChromeOS and User Feedback
ChromeOS for Chromebooks offers settings to remap dedicated keys, including the Quick Insert key, to different shortcuts.
While Googlebook OS has not yet implemented an equivalent feature, Rahman noted in response to user queries that he would share requests for remapping capabilities with the development team. No official timeline has been announced for key remapping support in Googlebook OS.
