Google is reportedly developing a new feature for the Googlebook called "Phone Unlock," which allows users to unlock their device using a nearby Android smartphone.

According to an APK teardown of Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 for Pixel devices by Android Authority, the code reveals setup screens and specific operational details for the feature.

How Phone Unlock Works and Its Re-Locking Mechanism

Once Phone Unlock is configured, as long as your paired Android smartphone is nearby and unlocked, opening the lid, moving the mouse, or pressing a key on your Googlebook will automatically unlock the device screen.

When the laptop unlocks, a notification is sent to the paired smartphone. If your Googlebook unlocks unintentionally, tapping this notification instantly re-locks the laptop remotely.

This functionality closely mirrors the "Smart Lock" feature previously available for pairing Android phones with Chromebooks.

Setup Interface and Security Considerations

The setup menu includes a "Choose your phone" option, allowing users to select which smartphone to use for unlocking. Within these settings, users can view their registered phone, add new devices, or manage existing pairs.

The setup graphics showcase a laptop icon featuring a "G" logo, indicating that the feature is specifically tailored for Googlebook devices.

Explanatory text during setup warns that using Phone Unlock may be less secure than strong unlock patterns, PINs, or passwords. Additional code snippets also point to hardware compatibility checks on the device side.

Expected Release Schedule and Requirements

Because Phone Unlock was discovered in unreleased code prior to an official announcement, the exact release timeline, feature details, or whether it reaches final rollout remain subject to change.

Since it was spotted in Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1, a standard rollout timeline points toward the Android 17 QPR3 update in March 2027. However, depending on the release schedule for the Googlebook hardware itself, Google could potentially accelerate its release to Android 17 QPR2 in December 2026.

Googlebook already supports cross-device Android integration like "Cast My Apps" and "Quick Access." These features require devices running Android 17 or later, and Phone Unlock is expected to share similar system requirements upon its official debut.
